Actor Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja is going to release in China on November 29, Friday. The film, already a big hit in India, is looking at rewriting history for Tamil cinema at the China box office. Maharaja has reportedly sold over 93,000 tickets so far, making it one of the most anticipated Indian movies on the market.
As reported by Koimoi, the Nithilan Saminathan-directorial has already grossed $500K in China, which comes to around Rs 4.22 crore gross, in four days. The preview shows began on Monday and the audience’s response has been tremendously positive, indicating a strong start for the film at the ticket window on Friday.
Made on a budget of around Rs 20 crore, Maharaja went on to gross around Rs 109.13 crore at the worldwide box office upon its release in June. With its China release now, the film is expected to set new benchmarks globally, adding to its existing cume.
Earlier, a few visuals from the preview shows of Maharaja in China went viral on social media. The videos showed the Chinese audience looking shocked and completely blown away by the film, especially with the revelations during the climax scene.
If everything goes as per the initial trend that is visible right now, Maharaja is set for two-digit opening day numbers at the box office on its opening day in China. This would be a big feat to achieve for any Indian film there.
The film follows the story of a barber, who’s a single father to a daughter. He reports to the police after a dustbin gets stolen from his home, which held great emotional value for him and his daughter. As the story unfolds, it is revealed that there’s more to it than what meets the eye.
